The pan will increase friction with the track as the box, which is chain driven, comes towards the front of the sled. The pan is sliding on the ground without much resistance at the start of the pull. The two major components of the sled are the box and pan. As the competitor takes off down the track, the load will get heavier to pull. The sled (otherwise known as weight transfer) is hooked to the pulling vehicle. If more than one competitor travels beyond the full distance, a "Pull Off" will occur. These distances are recorded and results are based upon those distances.

Once the competitor makes his or her pull, it is measured. The competitor has two attempts to make a pull, if they do not travel 100 feet in their first attempt. If a competitor would touch the line they will be disqualified. The dirt track is usually 300 feet long with two white lines on each side as boundaries. The concept of pulling is based upon who can drag the sled the farthest on a dirt track.
