One minor suggestion is to apply a bit of distortion correction to make the church? steeple vertical. I didn't bother pixel-peeping, just enjoying the overall effect. The second is better mostly due to the darker background.

It's certainly disappointing that there's no big improvement along the lines of the 7D and 7D Mark II but the result is in line with other tests that have shown essentially no difference in performance between the 6D and 6D Mark II sensor. Stacking whilst complicating the whole imaging and processing procedure is still an excellent way to control noise. Most noise reduction programs are merely blurs so if you go hard with them you simply blur the detail out of the image and it loses vitality. The earlier image to me is also quite a bit better. The image you presented though is so heavily blurred with noise reduction that you could not tell if there were more noise. That's great you are happy with your 6D2 and I am sure either model will do fine. I don't know any thing about Cannons (Nikon User) but the 2014 image looks a lot better to Me. See Figure 3 here for how this compares (it falls on the 6D line): In 30 second or so nightscape images with fast lenses, the noise from skyglow is greater than dark current, so camera noise is not a limiting factor.Īt a camera temperature of 24C I get 1.8 electrons/second dark current. Also the higher frame rate means it will be a better backup camera for action photography. While it is disappointing that it isn't in the 7d2 class (about 10 to 20x better), it means I can still do very nice nightscapes with th 6D2, and the 6D + 6D2 will be great for meteors. There is no amp glow, and the dark current per pixel measures (preliminary) the same as the 6D1. I have a 6D2 and did a 10-minute dark frame. I agree, your new image shows the 6D2 appears just as good as the 6D1 (technically).

But, in fairness, in the 3-year-gap between images, a lot has changed-my experience & processing technique, the software used, & the camera.įorm your own conclusions. Upon close inspection, I find less noise & more detail from the Mark II image. But I wanted to see if I could get a decent MW image from the Mark II in spite of all the negative reports.

Intended as a comparison, not a test-too many variables & different processing. Both taken from pretty-much same location. Processed in DPP for RAW conversion, then PS CS6 with some plug-ins.īelow that is a 3-image horizontal pano, each image in portrait, taken about 3 years earlier with my 6D & same lens. This is a 3-image vertical panorama, each taken in portrait. It is fitted with a clear piece of plastic that serves as a first line of defence against large dirt and dust particles entering the rear of the lens when there is no rear cap fitted.
